Artist insight: The first time I drove on the Snake Pass was to ferry myself and my sister to visit our pal in her first year at Sheffield Uni. It was not too long after I’d passed my driving test. My Dad let me borrow his rusty B reg ford escort – it had a 900 engine, was super nippy but struggled on the hills. A few miles short of the Snake the radiator hissed its displeasure and overheated. Determined to have our night of freedom – we managed to get some Radweld and journey onward. By this time, it was dark, I couldn’t see the twists and turns and steep drops down the valley on the roads edge and I was pretty terrified when I drove us back again in daylight when I could see every contour – but what a stunning route it is. The Snake Pass is fairly well known and revered for its snakiness – it’s a beautiful route to drink in some jaw-dropping Peak District countryside views. Valleys, hills, heather, woodland, dry stone walls and of course the bouncing bomb reservoirs. And if you’ve ever fancied driving it – then maybe do it sooner rather than later, as it’s role as an ‘A’ road is rumoured to be coming to an end. The state of it gets sorrier and sorrier. A large back log of major repairs stacking up and some very scary one lane stretches where the other side of the road has fallen away and been left as is. It’s very often shut as it’s too dangerous to cross. One such time when it was shut, I walked the start of the Snake – and took the liberty of walking down the middle of the road. I felt giddy with the headrush of power – until a car that had chanced its luck and gone up the Snake anyway was turned around and headed towards me. Artist insight: Originally from an industrial new town on the river Mersey, I've resided within orbit of Manchester for more than half my life and in a beautiful old Mill town in Derbyshire on the edge of the Peak District for over 23 years. At first, no doubt out of habit and to visit family I would spend weekends heading back to Cheshire and in the Stockport and Manchester area. Then I had a sudden realisation that I was doing this and thereby limiting myself – so made big efforts to explore the Peak District and Derbyshire instead. It has been such an eye opener - and I've spent lots of beautiful days walking and scarcely seeing another soul, it's incredibly peaceful, and the scenery has such rugged beauty - carved by glaciers, weather worn and seemingly untouched by commercialism. Several of years ago after some breath-taking walks in the Derbyshire Dales I made up my mind to really see a whole lot more of the Dales. Hence my trip to Bradford Dale. Last year, I had two separate days in Bradford Dale starting out from the picturesque village of Youlegreave. By total fluke, it was wall to wall sunshine on each occasion. Everything was bathed in a beautiful golden glow and looked magical. It felt like all was right in the world - in this beautiful place. Had I taken my swimming costume (and some courage) I might even have joined the many bathers in the river Bradford. Instead, I painted a picture of them :0) Such a beautiful place - if you love peaceful, scenic walking with nature in abundance and history on your shoulder. You will enjoy a day out here. Even if just to relax with a picnic and paddle your toes. Gazing in awe at the majesty of the large, weathered stack known as the Carreg Bica with its wonderfully characterful rock strata, colourful tide marks and resident molluscs and seaweed. Waiting till the tide goes out enough to take a stroll around past the 'frog' as it’s affectionately known, to the second bay along - Cilborth, where it is even more peaceful still. Soaking up some sun and the outstanding beauty of it all, breathing in the fresh sea air, wriggling your toes in the pristine, soft golden sand. Sitting on deck chairs, catching up with all the family chat. Sunny one minute, then the big grey clouds roll in and it looks even more incredible, yet gets a bit cool. And is the threat of rain and cold enough to put us off? Is it bloody heckers like. Just wait a few minutes till the weather changes again, put on another layer, play cricket or get your hot flask out. If there’s a quick downpour – put a towel over your head or dash for the bus shelter with the rest of the beach. If it gets proper cold and rainy then it might be time to get your packamac out or just pop to the pub for a bit of a warmth and refreshment. Can't say fairer than that. This unique standing stone is phenomenal - the Carreg Bica. Apparently it was formed by soft sediment during the late Ordovician period in the Paleozoic Era - meaning "ancient life" and witnessed the first mass extinction event recorded in rock. The period spans from 541 to 252 million years ago – far more than we can possibly comprehend. Artist insight: Back to Grindslow Knoll after a break - this is rather a cruel pun - to myself. Edale in Autumn with a view of Grindslow Knoll. This is my favourite walk. It makes my heart sing, I love these views - giving me a feeling of euphoria, peace and contentment. In 2020 I did it 6 times, including solo. Days after completing this walk for the 6th time within a year (2020), I injured my leg pretty catastrophically. It was the eve of New Years Eve. During Covid. After being carried by stretcher from hills beyond reach of vehicles by the amazing folk at Mountain Rescue, I then spent 10 days in hospital, where no family visits were allowed. It was such a tremendously tough time. Since then, I've put in huge efforts to rehabilitate and gain function. A further surgery, with hip bone graft plus more metal - finally I had the fix I needed, and back to the rehabilitation again. It's taken years to get back what I've lost, to be able to walk such a walk - and finally I managed to get up there again on 20th October 2024. It felt utterly amazing, such an achievement and so good to be back there again.
